My Car Air Con repair

Air conditioning is so much part of our lives here in Singapore and for me, they "died" on me twice on 2 separate locations"". One is my car and the other is my bedroom. What are the possibility of such to happen to anyone?!

Anyway, after consulting my sister and reading Nissan Latio Forum, I went to Ang Mo Kio AutoPoint, 2nd floor Unit 15 (#02-15). The technician checked and found out that my cooling coil is leaking based on the symptoms I mentioned to him. In one year, I had top up gas for my AC for me car twice and the last time I did was just 2 months ago. There were smell and hissing sound which can be heard inside the car. I would have to replace my compressor if the symptoms include intermittent air conditioning cut during driving or when stationery.

Damage:  $455 in total. (Replacing Cooling coil & labour - $430, Air Con filter - $25)

Kelvin used to work in Tan Chong as an engineer therefore more specialized with Nissan cars.

Your Windows 7 or Windows 8 not displaying Chinese texts

Well, this happens to me very often previously before my colleague told me to put one text file on my desktop with Chinese characters.

True enough, when I got hold of my new laptop, without this chinese text file, even when I type chinese characters, it will show squares instead of displaying the actual chinese characters I keyed. Remembering the solution, I did as mention earlier. Restart my laptop, voila, it works!

Not sure why I have to do this, but perhaps someone out there know how to solve this? Else I will just stick to this solution!

BlackBerry Q10 may release here in Singapore June 2013

With BlackBerry Z10 released for a month here in Singapore and BlackBerry Q10 becoming available for pre-order in Canada for actual release in end April 30th, wondering when it will come to Singapore which I think those who are BlackBerry hardcore qwerty keyboard fans awaits for its arrival. From what I had gathered, it should be release in June or latest July.

Check out how it looks and its specifications:

Obviously, it look pretty close to BlackBerry 9900 but without the the buttons & optical sensor which sits above the qwerty keyboard. One of the main reason why Q10 is better than Z10 is the battery life, other than its smaller screen which uses lesser power, it also spotted with bigger capacity of 2100mAH whereas Z10 only 1800mAH.

Based on my read up, there are 3 main features that I find worth sharing here:

Type N Go takes the Universal Search feature to the next level by allowing users to directly access BlackBerry®10 functionality using the physical keyboard. For example, say you want to send a quick BBM®message to your friend Peter. Press the spacebar on the keyboard to initiate the Search function. After the Search screen appears, type BBM and then the friend’s name, in this case, Peter. Under the Actions section, simply tap the contact you want to send the message to.

Type N Go Commands
  • BBM a contactTapNGo
  • BBM Videocall a contact
  • Email a contact
  • SMS/MMS a contact
  • Call a contact
  • Update Facebook status
  • Update Twitter status
  • Create a note
  • Set alarm/timer
  • Play music
  • Map an address/place

Customers may raise an issue that the typed command is missing the first letter, for example,“BM” instead of “BBM”.

Tip: Have the customer press the spacebar to initiate the Search function and then type the required command.

Word Prediction

Word Prediction on the BlackBerry® Q10 smartphone functions in a similar way to the virtual keyboard on the BlackBerry®Z10 smartphone. Instead of the predicted words appearing on the keyboard, three predicted words will appear on the screen just above the physical keyboard. The user can tap the words as they appear while typing them on keyboard.
If customers encounter issues with Word Prediction, consider the following points:
  • What word are they trying to type and are they spelling it correctly?
  • Is the customer holding down the ALT or SYM key while typing?
  • Is the customer using a different written language?
  • Because there are three word predictions, the words may be different than those that appear on the BlackBerry®Z10 smartphone. Additionally, devices will learn sentence prediction and structure differently depending on how each user writes content.

Pertaining to your Smartphone Contacts... Back up? Synchronise? (iOS & Android)

If you are using iPhone or Samsung Note 2, how do you ensure your contacts are back up? Synchronized with the one you use on your webmail? Or Outlook?

Last weekend, I came across one friend of mine whose iPhone app crashed and that caused her contacts to be wipe out. She have to re-create her contacts one by one, a tedious process indeed.

Below I will put together a series of solutions to ensure I have it all covered!

Sync contacts with your iOS device

To sync your Google contacts with your Apple iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), we recommend using CardDAV, which is an Internet open standard. When you sync your Google contacts using CardDAV, you’ll be able to edit, add, and remove contacts from your device and keep them in sync everywhere you use them.

Here’s how to sync your contacts to your device:

1.       Open the Settings application on your device.
2.       Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3.       Select Add Account...
4.       Select Other
5.       Select Add CardDAV Account
6.       Fill out your account information in the following fields:

  •    Server: Enter "google.com"
  •    User Name: Enter your full Google Account or Google Apps email     address.
  •   Password: Your Google Account or Google Apps password.
  •   Description: Enter a description of the account (e.g. Personal Contacts).

7.       Select Next at the top of your screen.
8.       Make sure that the "Contacts" option is turned to ON.

After you've completed setup, open the Contacts app on your device, and syncing will automatically begin.

More info on this set up can be found here:

If you are not using Gmail, you might want to consider using iCloud as a form of back up, do visit the link below to see how to set it up.

I strongly recommend using Gmail as your main Email Client as it carries many useful features and it will keep growing. Especially if you are using Google Android Smartphones like Samsung Note 2 or S3, this step should already set up and if you are not, you are underutilizing your phone capabilities.

What if you need to recover deleted iPhone contacts, knowing you have the habit of backing up your iPhone using old school method via iTunes backup? Refer to this link:

You are using Android Smartphones like Samsung S3 or Note 2?

Here is the link:

You are moving from iPhone to Android Smartphone? How to transfer your contacts over? Here it is:

It is imperative to always update your phone software ‘cause usually it contain bug fixes and performance enhancement. Especially when it comes to using Apple iOS. Let me know if you need any other solution pertaining to your smartphone contacts...

Thanks from BlackBerry Singapore

Remember the recent post I made on "No Push Email on BlackBerry 10"?

Well, I posted a thread in CrackBerry Forum with the same title & created a bit of stir and many replied on explaining "Push Mail" is still supported in BlackBerry 10 devices and BIS aka BlackBerry Internet Service is still operational even if you run BlackBerry 10 devices. In fact, without paying additional fees to use BB10 will attract users from other platform to switch, using their existing data plans for BB Z10.

Cut to the chase, BlackBerry PR here in Singapore somehow contacted me and sent me SWAG in appreciation to my support for BlackBerry.

A notebook, coasters & a stainless steel bottle.

A "Thank You" card from Zed Ngoh, BlackBerry PR agency in  Singapore representative.

"Dear Simon,

Thank you for your support towards BlackBerry, especially with the Straits Time article.

I look forward to you getting your Z10!

Zed Ngoh"

How I wish he give me Z10 itself but I understand, just because I post one thread and get Z10, many others will follow suit and demand one. For now, I just have to wait till my contract expires....
